Functional proteins

Building on its expertise in nutrition and specifically in the role of proteins in weight loss, PiLeJe has broadened its research into other fields by developing the concept of “functional proteins”.

Functional proteins are “smart” proteins which meet specific needs.
They are included in the composition of specific products which might, for example, be recommended by a doctor to sportsmen and women, older undernourished adults with muscle wastage (sarcopenia), or anyone with chronic tiredness resulting from prolonged stress.

The functional proteins developed by PiLeJe may be:

  • proteins whose content of a specific amino acid has been augmented,
  • proteins combined with specific micronutrients or plants.

Leucine, at a certain dose, triggers muscle anabolism, i.e. the manufacture of muscle fibres. A high concentration of leucine is particularly valuable for older adults who are undernourished or recovering from a fracture since it helps them to rebuild muscle mass.

Tyrosine is an amino acid used in the manufacture of dopamine and noradrenaline; two neurotransmitters which are involved in regulating emotions, motivation and concentration. A tyrosine supplement is beneficial and often recommended for the management of fatigue associated with chronic stress.

Tryptophan is an amino acid which is a precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter which is involved in the mechanisms associated with food cravings. One of its indications is as part of a therapy for disordered eating behaviour.

Combatting stress

Golden root and magnesium are well suited to being combined with tyrosine since they complement the action of this amino acid.

Golden root is an adaptogenic plant which helps the body overcome and recover from a period of physical or mental stress. Magnesium is used up by the body in large quantities during chronic stress.

Restoring the balance of the intestinal microbiota

Fibre may be combined with protein to correct a potential dysbiosis (or imbalance) in the intestinal microbiota.

Regulating blood sugar levels

Chromium offers particular benefits when combined with tryptophan, with which it has a synergistic effect. This trace element plays an essential role in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. It particularly helps to regulate blood sugar levels and food cravings.
